Competency and Expertise

Brian has spent over 26 years working within the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

In the last 6 years he has concentrated on fire risk assessement, an ideal background for running Fire Risk Management Solutions Ltd. Prior to that Brian’s 6 years working as an instructor and Deputy Course Director at Washington Hall, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services International Training Centre, provided the experience required to design and run the fire risk management training sessions. In earlier years, Brian was a front line firefigher with a number of managerial and leadership positions, giving him the hands on practical experience of fire and the risks involved.

Between 2000 and 2005, Brian was Acting Station Officer / Fire Safety Manager and the Technical and Community Fire Safety Officer.

The technical role of this position required the issue and enforcement of Fire Certificates for all designated premises (Fire precautions Act 1971), and assisting non-designated workplaces in their compliance with the ‘Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997’. The position also required provision of guidance and advice to other licensing authorities on a variety of other premises, including; residential care and nurseries (National Care Standards), licensed premises (Local Authorities) and schools and places of education (OFSTED). Time was also spent examining plans for proposed new build or alterations; working closely with the Local Authority Building Control Department and/or Approved Inspectors (Building Regulations 2000). With all places of work now required to produce a Risk Assessment in case of Fire the work required a thorough understanding and knowledge of “Fire Safety an Employers Guide”.

Between 2000 and 2005, Brian was Sub Officer, Deputy Course Director / Trainer

At Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services’ highly respected International Training Centre at Washington Hall. The first two years were “On the boards” as a trainer, teaching and supervising the various Commercial Courses provided. The late ‘90’s were a busy time for the Commercial Faculty, and Brian was appointed Deputy Course Director. Responsibilities included not only the on-going weekly running of trainer allocation, facilities availability and resource maintenance and development, but also the production of new courses tailored to the variety of Service user needs.
